Like any millennial, I questioned the importance of a degree many times. Looking back I realize how much it has strengthened the characteristics in me that are essential for success. A degree is so much more than what you learn from an academic standpoint. It teaches you how to cope with your own internal battles. It tests your self determination, it challenges you to get out of your comfort zone, it forces you to properly manage your time while awakening who you become under stress. It expands your mind on a variety of subjects and makes you appreciate being able to afford the necessities in life.
The friends I have made throughout college are very unique and important to me. They came into my life at a very different point than any of my other friends and have truthfully stuck by my side when my stress levels were through the roof. Most people point to their childhood friend and say they grew up with that person. For me, I grew up with my college friends. They are the ones who saw me grow the most in such a short period of time.
I am so proud of how much i’ve grown throughout this chapter of my life it feels like yesterday that I got my acceptance letter and moved to Alberta. I think the biggest lesson I got out of this chapter was to not be narrow-minded and embrace any opportunity to grow and challenge yourself – because that alone brings nothing but success.
Although I feel very nostalgic at all the memories that were made I can’t wait to get started on the many more goals I have set out for myself. The journey to success has just begun in my eyes and I can’t wait to get started. After all, if you believe in yourself you are halfway there.
My 24 year old self.
